If you arrive by airplane the best, cheapest and fastest way to get to the city is the "S-Bahn"- (city train). In about 20minutes it runs to the citycentre of Frankfurt. If your plane is landing from the east your chances are great, that you get an overlook of the city, if you sit on the right side of the airplane, since the flightpath and runway are pretty parallel to Frankfurt.
If your plane arrives from the west, you are often able to watch the river "Main" going into the river "Rhein".

Catch the S-Bahn 8 or 9 and go 5stops to "Hauptwache", which is the citycentre.
The departing station is situated under ground beneath Terminal 1 of the airport (so if you arrive at Terminal 2 take the sky train to Terminal 1).
Do not forget to get a ticket before, the price for it is currently 3,55 Euro.

At "Hauptwache" station sightseeing and shopping could start. If you want to see the "Römerberg" turn right between the "Esprit" fashion store and "HAKO" shoestore. Than walk along the pedestrian precinct for about 5/10 minutes. Some squares are opening up: 1. "Liebfrauenberg", 2. "Paulplatz" with church "Paulskirche" and than 3. "Römerberg". You could continue walking to the river "Main".

The same "S-Bahn" train brings you back to the airport. Mondays to Saturday they run every 15 minutes. Sundays it runs every 30 minutes, but trains also serve the airport from/to "Hauptbahnhof". So if you do not want to wait, take any train to the mainstation "Hauptbahnhof", go up to platform 20 or 22 or so and than continue your journey.
