  ghorfas in Metameur
by sachara

The area around Medenine is known because of its ksour. Ksour are fortified Berber strongholds consisting of many ghorfas (rooms). Ghorfas with their typical arched structure have sometimes three or more storeys high and were built to store grain.

Nowadays most of the ksour are falling into ruin, but some are restored and converted into a hotel or market. On our way from Gabes to Zarzis and Djerba we visited Metameur with a ksar of the 13th century.

Address: Medenine/Metameur
Directions: Metameur is 6KM west of Medenine. Medenine lies 73 KM south of Gabes.
