One word--SF Muni bus #39. Okay, it's more than one word but if you want to avoid huffing and puffing on your way to the tower then better take this bus. It starts near Fisherman's Wharf. For bus #39's route and schedule, go to SF Muni's web site (www.sfmuni.com).

If you want to take your car, be prepared to wait for a parking spot to be available.

Coit Tower was built in 1933 from funds bequeathed by Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the city. It is said to look like a fire hose nozzle but others question this. There are murals on the first floor. There's also an elevator that will take you to the observation deck. The view from there is awesome! I think I paid $3 for the elevator ride.
