Surely, this is an all Los Angeles kind of cafe. In the heart of heavily latino (very Mexican) enclave of Echo Park, I came to Masa- and wouldn't ya know, I happened to come during festivities of the yearly Asian cultural celebration, Lotus Festival! How perfect !
Masa, in Spanish, means several terms: (1) mass; volume; (2) crowd, masses; (3) dough, paste; mortar. In this case, I believe that the original restaurant founders related mainly to the latter of the definitions. Masa was an old Cuban bakery. House specialities of Masa are the fresh whole pizzas, bread pudding and other pastries, including quiche. How brilliant of a name to have for a restaurant! Surely it fits the aspiration of what it wants to have : crowds coming in to consume good food , including pizza and pastries in mass quantities!
I was drawn in by the menu outside that mention of a variety of French quiche. Never had I thought that my first meal in Echo Park (outside of Dodger Stadium, that is) would be a quiche!
Expect a casual enviornment here with simple yellow & blue Provence decor. Young, hip-looking waitress are friendly and glad to be of service. I stopped by here in mid-afternoon so I can't judge if Masa really attracts "masa" (a big crowd, that is) but it doesn't seem to get too congested.
Masa is located off Sunset Blvd (the more down-to- earth, eastern part of the famed street).
Favorite Dish: I had Spinach and cheese quiche for Sunday brunch with sausage and breakfast square potatoes. Very tasty!
Address: 1800 W. Sunset Blvd
Price Comparison: about average
Directions: Echo Park, near from Dodger Stadium , Los Angeles. Don't be fooled - Masa along the eastern part of Sunset Blvd (east of Hollywood) though it is officially 1800 W. Sunset.
