A small creek (sandy beach in the centre of the picture) has been named The Catalans due to the spanish fishers who came to live here once free fishing and selling had been authorized (1761). This spanish presence has inspired Alexandre Dumas (Edmond Dantes and Mercedes in "Le Comte de Montecristo"). In 1858, the beach was brought into fashion, the last catalans moved to the "Vallon des Auffes". Nowadays, "Le cercle des Nageurs de Marseille", a private club (you are not allowed to enter without inscription) north to the beach, has formed many champions.
