So many people go to Pisa and see nothing else but the Leaning Tower. What a shame.

We found the Romanesque-Pisan Cathedral to be ever so beautiful. Its shape is that of a Latin cross with a huge apse and a large dome.

There are five orders of arches on the facade as well as three marvelous bronze portals. The original portals were destroyed in a fire, and these were produced after 1595. The central door has images from the life of the Virgin Mary. The side door have images from the life of Jesus.

Once you go inside the Cathedral, you will see five aisles that are divided by tall columns with Corinthian capitals. If you look up, you will see the lacunar ceiling, but over the great apse is a ceiling that is decorated with a lovely mosaic of Christ on the Throne.

My favorite thing inside is shown in my photograph. It's the Pulpit that was created by Giovanni Pisano at the beginning of the 14th Century. It is located against the first pillar to the left of the great dome; it has a hexagonal plan on a round base. Some of the columns (some resting on the lions) symbolize the Four Cardinal Virtues that sustain the Church
The bas-relief work at the top is very special.

You can hear your voice echo in the central aisle because it is to tall with magnificent columns and arches.

The Pisa Cathedral is a piece of art and worthy of much admiration.
