In the early 15th century, during the reign of despot Stefan Lazarevic, Belgrade was proclaimed the capital city of the medieval Serbian state. On its acropolis a castle was built with the ruler's palace, a donjon tower and a drawbridge at the entrance. In 1690 the castle was destroyed, and you can see in the picture what it was like.
