Alcatraz was a U.S. Federal Penitentiary before it was closed down in 1963. It is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Alcatraz is the stuff of myths and legends, fueled by Hollywood's imagination. Even after faithfully following the audio tour and learning a lot about its history, however, to me it has lost none of its mystique.

If you have a fixed travel schedule, better get your ticket online at the Blue & Gold Fleet web site. You pay the same price ($16 for the audio tour) as a ticket sold at the counter. When I was there last July 3, the earliest date that you can get a ticket for is already July 6! Buying your ticket from the counter during peak season is definitely not a good idea.

Address: In the middle of San Fracisco Bay
