We were staying in Gaeta, Italy, between Rome and Naples when we decided to make a 4-day tour of Sicily. We drove to Reggio di Calabria and took the ferry (car and all) to Messina, Sicily.

If you are going to Sicily without a car, you will probably take a faster hydrofoil.

Ferry services are called traghetti. We did not take the state-run ferry (FS); instead, we took the another choice, the independently run Meridiano.
The cost at that time was about $4.00 round trip, and I note that it's about that same price today.

It takes about 40 minutes to go from Reggio to Messina.

I recently read that a bridge has been planned and designed and is supposed to start being built this year (2005). It is projected to be completed by 2011. It is to be called the Strait of Messina Bridge. If it is built, it will be the largest single span bridge in the world.
