Now, other than the Portuguese and the Dutch, there is another heritage group in Melaka. They are the Peranakans, the royal descendents of a political marriage between a Chinese Princess and a Malacan Sultan. Yes, way before the Portuguese and the Dutch came to Melaka, Admiral ZhengHo descended on the shores of Melaka and made it a protectorate of China. To seal the alliance, a princess was given in marriage to the Sultan. Well, the descendents of the royal marriage continued to live in Melaka till today, most live in gilded splendor and in a culture that has fused both Chinese and Malay culture.

If you're keen to see how the rich Peranankans of Melaka live, pop into the Baba and Nonya Heritage Museum of Melaka. What I liked about this place was the guided tour through the actual Peranakan ancestral home. Through a careful explanation, I was able to see how my ancestors lived in a bygone age ( Yes, I'm Peranankan ) . The townhouse featured an interior courtyard and artefacts of staggering grandeur, such as hardwood furniture endowed with mother-of-pearl inlaid designs and Nyonya-style ceramics in jewel-like colours.
