River City, Bangkok: 2 reviews and 2 photos
Even if you are not in the buying market it won't stop you from taking an interesting look in a comfortable four storeyed, tout free, air conditioned mall devoted to arts and antiques of South Asia. River City. Sometimes the private market contains better pieces than the public galleries. Here's one example - the shop owners have a deep knowledge of their treasured financial assets. Information sells.
Classical Thai and Siamese arts and images, furniture with the resonant waft of wax and polish, its mainly plastic arts though there are some two dimensional which pack easily and can be hung in the smaller room.
Clay and ceramics from mainland China, chests and cabinets from Tibet and Nepal, masks from the ethno boys in tribes and islands around various Asian archepelagos. Altar bells and scripts from the plains of Pagan.
...artistic references to Angkor, Cambodia and then westward to Burma / Myanamar.
A relaxing and protected environment, free from the hard sell. Contemporary pictures are oftne displayed in the main exhibition area, and just next to this on the ground / first floor a collection of silk shops and tailors for your loverrly - maybe yourself, who knows.
On the river facing side of the Mall there are some decent cafes and restaurants. Though to be fair, they are overpriced for anything over a one plate meal or a cup of tea. Those on the ground floor play to the tourist tour boats that leave from the pier...
...and believe me, those tourists do not know what they are missing, rarely do they explore the four floors of antique galores behind.
This can be seen as part of the Urban Stroll around the area shown in the tip with the map, shown at the beginning of this section
