Barakholka market market is like a city inside almaty city. this incredible big flea market sells all from sheeps from shoes to vegatables to carpets. inside this labirinths of shops and tents you can find many restaurants where you can eat what people here eat. because of the ethnic diversity of the fela market you can actually choose restaurants (more like big covered food stands of course) from chinese, uyugur and kazakh people.
Favorite Dish: i ate noodles and chickpeas 2 times! very tasty and no meat. they had one made with meat and another made withoout meat. also i ate some yogurt with it and bread. all very cheap maybe about $1.5 hehe. incredible.

Most of Almaty dwellers find Barakholka market insanitary. And that's true. Of course, local government is tackling this issue, but no result. In future Barakholka will be moved outside the city borders. They say 30km further.
The history of Barakholka has begun back in Soviet times. At those times it was hard to find things in common use or some unique goods. That's why people used to trade there, although it was illegal. For example, my parents used to buy shoes there by Salamander. Because they were rare.
