As the Royal Town of Kelantan, there are few istanas (royal palaces) in Kota Baharu.

As residence (and former residence) and ceremonial venue for the royal family, the palaces have unique architecture. Some of the palaces are still occupied by the Sultan and Sultanah and off-limits to visitors but viewable from outside - take a peek at the palaces for a glimpse of royalty's life - and some are former royal buildings which have been converted into public buildings and can be visited during their opening hours.
