Founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the 1,441-seat Guthrie Theater opened in 1963. Guthrie wanted to establish a theater with a resident acting company to perform classic plays on a rotating repertory. And because of the expense involved in operating a theater on Broadway, he sought bids from other cities. Seven cities expressed interest in having the theater, but Guthrie chose Minneapolis due to its enthusiasm, location in the heartland of the country, and broad cultural base. (Minneapolis has more theater seats per capita than any city in the country except New York City).

During its inaugural season, Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy were among the actors who performed at the Guthrie Theater. In 1968, it was the first resident theater to do a national tour, producing plays in New York City and Los Angeles.

Directions: The Guthrie Theater is located at 725 Vineland Place, just west of downtown Minneapolis.
