  Novalesa Abbey - Fresco
by ant1606

Founded in AD 726, this abbey is located on the ancient communication way between present-day Italy and France. It's one among the finest in Piedmont and incredibly rich with byzantine-age style fresco paintings dating back to the XIV century. Some of these did not undergo restoration as they still preserve their intact original bright colors, like the very first depiction of St. Nicholas bringing gift through the chemney, this being the origin of what every kid expects to receive by Christmas.
St. Nicholas is depicted (picture here) while putting money in the house chemney of a family where a bankrupt father would have otherwise been forced to have his two daughters to become ladies of peasure for a living.

Directions: Ax. 65 Km from Turin.
Take SS25 to Susa, follow Moncenisio but 1 Km after Susa take a right to Novalesa.
