'' In the small village el Jem you can find the ruins of the largest colosseum in North Africa, a huge amphitheatre, which could hold 35.000 spectators. This monument from the third century illustrates the grandeur of Imperial Rome''. This is the description of this site, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The amphitheatre sticks up in the middle of the small town and it is enclosed by a small fence. For a small entrance fee you can visit the amphitheatre. Under the arena are two long passageways uncovered. The guide told us, that here the animals, gladiators and other unfortunate people were held till they had to battle and die in the ring, entertaining the masses.

Directions: El Jem lies between Sousse and Sfax near the east coast.
