Carthage was founded in the 9th century B.C. on the Gulf of Tunis. The following centuries it developed into a great trading empire, covering almost the whole Mediterranean. In the Punic wars Carthage tried to occupy territories belonging to Rome.

In 146 B.C. Rome destroyed its rival and its brillliant civilisation. The second Carthage, now Roman, was established on the ruins of the first. Carthage is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I visited Carthage two times, but still haven't seen all. The sites are quite spread out, so you need a lot of time to see all. Most of what you can see, is of Roman origin and also this is not much more than ruins. The location at the sea is superb anyway.

There is a museum with the ruins of Byrsa nearby. In the south you can visit Tophet and the Punic Ports. In the north you can visit the Magon Quarter. More inland you find the Amphitheatre and the cisterns.

Directions: You can reach Carthage with the TGM line from Tunis.
