High in the mountains, two hours west of Panama City, El Valle de Anton rests in a jungled floor of the crater of an extinct volcano. There is a popular handicrafts market here on the weekends and it is a popular retreat for locals to escape the heat, bustle and noise of Panama City. One road goes up and into El Valle. It wasn’t until 1997 that it was paved and the town’s apparent prosperity dates to that event. Besides the handicraft market, there is an emphasis on ecotourism. See my El Valle pages for more on what to see and do here.
