The serpents are actually symbols of the chtonic powers associated with the element of water. Especially in India, they were regarded as guardians of the treasures of the earth and, powerful beings living in the sea, rivers, lakes and clouds. They were protectors of the world, too, and the Buddhists named these divines Nagas, Garudas, Titans, Asuras, Gandharvas. At the Pura Rambut Siwi Temple you'll see serpents in the cave, as brightly green banisters, guards and, even on the beach itself ...

With a bit of imagination you may watch the Javanese Goddess riding a Naga, like the Javaneses and Balineses do ...
