"HYDROPONIC GREENHOUSES" Minden Off The Beaten Path Tip by Rich62

Minden Off The Beaten Path: 3 reviews and 6 photos

Just east of Minden on highway 6 you will pass a gigantic greenhouse complex. Inside are thousands upon thousands of tomatoes being grown. But there is no soil in these greenhouses; "hydroponic" means the roots of each plant are in water, not soil. The plant is fed by adding the proper chemicals to the water. These tomatoes are shipped all over the U.S. to be sold in stores.

This business had a rough start as a terrible hailstorm broke much of the glass. This in turn resulted in a fungus infecting the greenhouse and all tomato plants had to be destroyed, the fungus eradicated, and they had to start all over again. They even purchased a "hail cannon" which fires sonic "booms" into hail-bearing clouds to break up the hailstones.

p.s. sadly it was announced on April 19, 2006, that the greehouse was closing due to financial difficulties. They had left crates of free tomatoes by the entrance for local people to take.
