"Karl Marx-Hof" Karl Marx-Hof Tip by Bjorgvin

Karl Marx-Hof, Vienna: 2 reviews and 3 photos

This example of social housing development, in an outlying district of Vienna, is of historical significance. It was built between 1927 and 1930 by the social democratic city council (between 1919 and 1934, when the Socialists held power, people spoke of ?Red Vienna?). It is more than a kilometre long and contains some 1600 relatively small flats and communal facilities such as baths, laundries, shops, libraries, nursing schools etc. and many green areas. The rent was to be well within the means of the tenants and this building complex and others like it in the city was financed by taxes on luxury items.
