St. Martin's Church tower from Swietojanska St.

St. Martin's, one of the oldest churches in Warsaw, was founded by Prince Ziemowit Trojdenowicz for the Order of Augustinian Friars brought here from Silesia by his wife in 1355. Full of wonderful works of art: fourteen altars, numerous precious paintings and statues, the church suffered the same fate as the Cathedral during the Warsaw Uprising. Restored after the war, it could never regain its former splendour though.
The church was the meeting place of Solidarity members before and during martial law and thus greatly contributed to the fall of the Communist rule.
