This is a must in Kaikoura. Go to the Visitor's Centre and book a whale watching excursion the minute you arrive. If it's summer, I suggest booking way in advance. You're guaranteed at least one whale sighting or you get to go out again (not a bad deal). In addition to whales we saw seals, seabirds called shags, an oyster catcher and lots of dolphins. It is so much fun and I highly recommend it!

Address: The Whaleway Station, Whaleway Road, Kaikoura 7340
Directions: The whale watching area is on the main road through Kaikoura near the beach. I'm not sure if this is the company I was with or not, but I'm including this website.
