"Watch the Gaspee Day Parade" Pawtuxet Things to Do Tip by Pawtuxet
Pawtuxet Things to Do: 19 reviews and 36 photos
On the 2nd Saturday in June, the town celebrates the Burning of the Gaspee. It was a British ship that was antagonizing the colonists. A group of Providence men heard the ship was grounded on a sand bar. They rowed out in long boats after dark and set the ship afire. Noone died...but it was the first armed attack against the British...before the Boston Tea Party. Noone was ever caught or punished in spite of a handsome reward offered by the king. We Rhode Islanders have always enjoyed our rather spirited history. :-) Many events surrounding the parade. See other tips for info on the Encampment, Fashion Show, and Children's Walking Tour. Some info on my Rhode Island page as well.
