This was once the site of Bali's most important kingdoms. Originally called Klung Kung, now the town is named Semarapura. The highlight of the area is the Semara Pura Complex. The Dewa Agung royal family settled here around the early 18th century. Unfortunately, much of the palace grounds were destroyed in fighting with Dutch troops in 1908.

Kertha Gosa-called the Hall of Justice-which made laws and enforced them during the time of the Dewa Agung dynasty. It's an open air building with beautiful murals. These paintings were originally done on cloth, this was copied onto asbestos sheeting in the 1940's.

Bale Kambang-the ceiling of this structure is painted in the similiar style as in the Kertha Gosa. The first row of murals deals with the astrological calendar, the other rows deal with local folk tales.

It's a beautiful garden setting with lotus ponds. Worth a visit.

Directions: town of Klungkung (semarapura), east Bali
