  Assumption Cathedral
by Bangkokjoe

I was here for a wedding a few Saturday's ago - so you're getting it...

...and not a stone's throw from the Oriental Hotel (if your name is Geoff Capes and it is a very very small stone).

Thailand has a mix of religions, more than just Buddhism, Muslims, Hindu, Christianity, etc. All seem to get along and with it in their own enclaves (in Bangkok at least). Assumption has a university attached, and its founding goes back to the days around 150 years back. When the European traders set up their warehouses and trading offices downstream from the Royal and rligious areas around Rattanoksin. Boats weren't often allowed upstream to pass the Royal Palace area, unless special permits were in hand (believe me, working in Bangkok... it is not easy to get a special permit without a few bottles of under the table whisky). So the French Embassy and mission set up in the area the Oriental Hotel is in now.

The cathedral is always open, just a case of finding which door, and you are felt welcome to pray or look around the details inside. And yes, it has that great echoey and incense smelling atmosphere of all decent churches.

This can be seen as part of the Urban Stroll around the area shown in the tip with the map, shown at the beginning of this section
