  Mandraki harbour entrance
by sandysmith

Mandraki Harbour is so-called as it was the old "sheep pen" which in Greek in "Mandri" and this name was often used for small encircling harbours.
The narrow entrance seen here at one time could be sealed with chains and according to legend this is where the Colossus of Rhodes would have been - straddling where the two statues of the Rhodian deer on either side now reside. However no evidence has been found to support this claim and its more likely that a statue of the colossus would have beeen sited near the Grand Master's Palace.
