  Cigarette machine, London.

If, like me, you are a smoker, do not be tempted to buy cigarettes from the machines in pubs or restaurants. The packets sold are invariably packs of 16 as opposed to the normal 20, and you will pay well over the odds for them. The best place to buy cigarettes is in supermarkets, whose prices are low due to the economies of scale, or, failing that, newsagents or off-licences.

Since I originally wrote this tip in 2005, the last Governmant has imposed a smoking ban in public places (contributing significantly to the closure of many pubs) so there are less vending machines than there were but the advice still stands. 16 cigarettes for much more than you should pay for 20?

Work it out yourselves!
