A stone castle was first built on this site in the 13th century on the site of a Pictish fort. Balvenie is an enclosed castle with a massive curtain wall. Despite its fortifications the castle never endured a major siege or battle.
Mary Queen of Scots visited here in 1562, when thw castle was musch improved.
