Noose and Gibbet pub, Sheffield 9
by suvanki

Broughton Lane in Sheffield is named after one Spence Broughton (1746-14th April 1792)
Mr Broughton hailed from Lincoln, where he was a respected farmer. Although he married into a good family, the dowery was frittered away on gambling, mainly at cock fights! This led to his downfall, he entered a life of crime (to pay off his debts) and joined the legendary Hatters club (made up of villains from nearby Attercliffe)

One of his escapades was to rob the Sheffield and Rotherham mail coach, when it was passing through Attercliffe in 1791, He and an accomplice carried out two further similar robberies, before being caught. In 1792, he was hung and then gibbeted in chain at Attercliffe Common. Apparently 40,000 locals witnessed this, then more turned up regularly to view his remains.
His remains were on display until 1827- to deter other would be highway men!!

He achieved notoriety as the last man in England to be dealt this punishment.

His remains were hung close to the sight of the present day 'Noose and Gibbet' pub, which is situated on Broughton Lane.

Outside the pub is a Gibbet, with a model of Spence Broughton - recently, this figure was draped in an England flag (During Euro 2012)

This pub is opposite the Motorpoint Arena, where many musical events take place, and next to Centretainment, a leisure arena for eating, drinking, bowling and watching films etc.

The pub itself offers a selection of beers, wines etc, food and lots of pictures and info about Spence Broughton as well as a hand, which is alleged to be his!!

Trams stop at Centretainment, just a 2 minute walk away

Yes, it's an interesting story - which most people in Sheffield don't know about.
