  Giant Garuda Statue
by bryINpoland

About 20 minutes south from Kuta, on the way to Uluwatu, is the GWK Cultural Centre. The center was built in the hopes that it would become a major tourist attraction in Bali, but because of major opposition, and decrease in tourism, the completion of the center has been delayed.

The completed main focal points of the park are the statues of Garuda, and Vishnu.

The Garuda statue has the head, wings, claws, and beak of an eagle, and the body and limbs of a man. He is a animal of Hindu mythology, and roams around the universe, destroying all that is bad.

Vishnu is also a god of Hinduism, and is believed to be the preserver of the universe. The statue faces over west Bali and stands over 23 meters high. VIshnu statues are ussually potrayed having 4 arms, but for some odd reason, this one has none.

The Culture center is also used for a concert venue, with the Garuda statue as the venues backdrop. Our taxi driver Amat was very happy to inform us that Limp Bitzkit has performed there. He must be a fan.

There is very little toursit traffic through the center, and you could also say that it is sadly an off the beaten path location. Admission into the center is 15,000 Rp ($1.50 US $2 AU).

Directions: 20 minutes south of Kuta towards Uluwatu. Its on the left hand side of Jl. Uluwatu.
