"Rialto Bridge" Rialto Bridge Tip by Sjalen
Rialto Bridge, Venice: 174 reviews and 301 photos
One of the most famous bridges in the world and rightly so. Here you can walk across the bridge to the left, right or centre. In the central passage, you will not see much of Canale Grande below you but you will find souvenir shops galore. On the sides, you have some of the best opportunities there are to catch life on Canale Grande with your camera. The bridge is situated at a place which was long the only one where you could cross Canale Grande without a boat (until the Accademia Bridge was built in 1854). There has been several wooden bridges here before but in 1444 one of those even collapsed under the weight of citizens celebrating a famous marriage and it was time to build a stone bridge. A competition (in which even Palladio took part) was held and in 1588-91, Antonio da Ponte's creation was built. Today, the area is known not only for its tourists but also for being a lively market and shopping area.
