"Bridge of Sighs" Ponte dei Sospiri Tip by Sjalen

Ponte dei Sospiri, Venice: 138 reviews and 210 photos

Along with Rialto, the most famous bridge in Venice. The best photos of it are taken from Ponte della Paglia (itself a bridge from 1360 although the current one is from 1847) which everyone knows so there is always a crowd there day and night. The Bridge of Sighs was bult 1600 as a new prison had just been built behind the Doge's Palace to house ever more city prisoners. Its name comes from the fact that the Lagoon view from the bridge was the last view prisoners saw of Venice and the are said to have sighed because of this. If you want to walk across the bridge itself to see the view, you have to visit the Doge's Palace.
