In ancient Greece, an asclepieion was a healing temple, sacred to the god Asclepius - the god of medicine. He was served not by priestesses but by a initiated group of Priest Doctors called the Asklepedia of which Hippocrates was a member. Besides treating patients, the Asklepieion also offered sanctuary to whoever asked for refuge.
