  THE USUAL TRAFFIC

well traffic in different parts of indian metropolis is only explained by the term chaos.

apart from a few exceptions like chandigarh most metropolitan cities have burgeoned beyond their limits.

with increasing per capita most indians now want to own a car which has moved beyond a luxury item to now become a necessity.

add to it the public transport system.

but calcutta beats it all.

on one hand it has the most beautiful mass rapid transit systems that is the first metro of the country. but on road its a different story altogether.

as an advise to a foreign tourist he better watch the traffic chaos from a vantage point rather than getting mixed up in the mess.

the ususal scene goes like this as the peak traffic hours 10-12am morning and 5-9pm evening approach suddenly the roads appear to be full of cars. all of them seem to be honking when apparently there is no space to move. traffic speed is slow leading to frustration and road rage.fights after two vehicles scrape accidentally arent uncommon.

it appears similar to an army of ants rushing home along narrow paths.

the vehicles that seem to add to the chaos are the two wheelers.on some roads the tramtracks cross and add to the misery.

traffic rules well beware beacuse when u least expect it the traffic poilcemen appear and show u the rulebook.my driver was swearing at the traffic policemen all along. it appeared he was at the receiving end more than once.

the public transport buses are old with rough corners jutting out making u squirm with fear lest someone gets cut with them.

hand signalling is a thing 7you will see in india look closely athe photograph and you will see the driver of the bus requesting side by using his arm out of the window.

occasionally you do get to see some beautiful cars like the mercedes but mostly you see only economy cars.

there is a flyover crossing the heart of kolkata which has eased the situation.outskirts of kolkata like saltlake and rajarhat are better places as far as traffic goes.
