  Mont St Michel

Mont Saint Michel, sits impressively on a small islet off the Normandy Manche coast. Attached to the mainland by a road these days & only gets totally cut off at exceptionally high tides.

The walled town is topped by the dominating Abbey, a place of worship has been here since the 7th century. The Abby is so well fortified it is the only place in north & west France not to fall in to the hands of the English in the 1500s although it was attacked 3 times. 0pening times are 9.30 - 6pm, slightly longer in the winter.

Today its a peaceful place, full of tourists most days of the year, we visited in the middle of winter & it was still busy then. You can presently drive to a car park on the base of the island & park there, but I have heard they are planning to get rid of the car park.

Just East of St Malo
