Musée de l'Armee - Les Invalides, Paris: 145 reviews and 339 photos
The Hotel des Invalides was a shelter for former soldiers. In 1671 Louis XIV decided to built a huge centre to take care of these men. Lots of soldiers had became wounded during the wars those days and as a sign of respect thay deserved the care they needed.
Tha architect Libéral Bruant got the task to built this shelter, that was completed in 1674. In 1677 the construction of the church in the centre was started. This church wasn´t completed until 1706.
At the end of the 17th century the Hotel des Invalides offered a place to 4.000 former soldiers. They men lived here, following their own rules: a mixture of religious and military rules. They also had their own task inside the centre: doing handcraft works like making carpets and shoes.
Nowadays the Hotel des Invalides has two purposes. First there is a huge War Museum inside the complex. It´s being renovated from 2003-2008, so only parts of the collection are open for public. I´ve been to the impressive and very complete exhibition about the Second World War.
The second purpose of the Hotel today is the same as what is was built for. The Institution Nationale des Invalides applies a shelter to former soldiers, that still live in the Hotel des Invalides. They surely have one beautiful home there!
