  Baha'i Shrine and Gardens
by Paul2001

Haifa has few in the way of must see attractions but one of the most impressive is the stunning Baha'i Shrine and Gardens. Haifa is the headquarters of the Baha'i faith and this Shrine is one of their most holy sites.
The Shrine is marked by the beautifully domed Shrine where one of the most important figures in Baha'i history, the martyred Bab, has been entombed. The interior of the tomb is impressively decorated with gold leaf and flowers. All the more remarkable are the surrounding gardens which were only partially complete when I visited in 1996. The gardens are now referred to as "the Hanging Gardens" for the way that they flow down the terraced landscape on the slopes of Mount Carmel.
To visit the shrine, you have to go between 9am to noon. Dress modestly for this is a religious site. It is free to enter the Shrine and Gardens. The Gardens are open all day.
