  Toledo Cathedral - the Transparente
by alucas

The Transparente is a most unusual feature - a hole cut in the wall of the Capilla Mayor and through the vault of the ambulatory to let light down onto the high altar. The resulting shaft is highly decorated with paintings and statues of angels and the saints. The photo does not do it justice, probably because I took it quickly when the staff weren't looking - photography of any kind is NOT allowed in the cathedral, and they are quick to stop you at the first sight of a camera. So different from Seville, where you can get blinded by the flashes from the cameras of the tour parties.
