As stated previously, miners of the past were a superstitious lot. Being pious did not mean that they did not believe in more than one God.
One god that they did believe in was the Treasure God. This god was supposed to protect the treasures of the ground but legend has it that he also protected thoughtful miners. This photo shows the god standing in front of a tunnel, supposedly stopping the miners from entering because there was danger there.
