Queen of the Salt Mines Diorama
by Ash59

Legend has it that the salt mines were part of the dowry of the Hungarian Princess, Kinga, when she wed Boleslaw the Shy over 700 hundred years ago, making this salt mine one of the oldest in Europe.

The even more romantic story is that before she would marry Boleslaw, she insisted that he give her a special present. The Princess stated that the present would involve the people of the area of Wieliczka, who were very poor at the time, and that it should be something that would benefit them. He gave them the salt mine so that they could earn money and the area has not looked back since.

This picture shows a reconstruction of this story, assuming that the story is true!
