900 year old ramparts and defense tower
by hundwalder

Shown in this photo are one of the oldest defense towers and part of the original ramparts. Construction of this oldest part of the fortress was started in 1077 by order of Archbishop Gebhard after serious and violent factions developed in the church within the Roman Empire. Hohensalzburg is a massive fortress that eventually became a self contained city. The fortress is amazingly well preserved with many of its original elements almost undisturbed. The castle complex has avoided the heavy facelifting given so many European castles, and looks very much as it did following the latest expansion and renovations of 500 years ago.
