Favorite thing: My dad's family who came from Germany and settled in the valley were Lutherans. Even though my grandparents lived in Silver Cliff, the church they went to was Hope Lutheran Church in Westcliff.
The Custer County C of C site says:
"(312 So. 3rd Street)-Built on this site in 1917, it houses one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in the state, orgainzed in 1872, when a group of German colonists settled in an area about 12 miles southwest of Westcliffe. Many descendants of these early settlers still live in the valley. The cross on the 96 foot steeple was originally covered with gold leaf. The church is on the National Register of Historical places."
Fondest memory: I don't really remember it, but I was baptized here. My mom was highly indignant because she wasn't allowed to carry me up to the alter because she was not a Missouri Synod Lutheran. My dad and his siblings were also baptized here, and it was here that my grandmother's funeral was held. I do remember that.
I took a picture of the church at the time that we moved from California to Key West in October 1966, and I painted this picture of it in 1967 when we lived in Key West. This photo of the picture was taken before it was finished. It does not yet have the golden aspen trees in it.
