A smaller and more manageable cemetery than Père Lachaise, Montmartre or Montparnasse cemeteries, you'll find people such as Montmartoise painter Maurice Utrillo buried here (his mother, Suzanne Valadon who was also a painter and a famous model, is buried in St-Ouen Cemetery).

You'll also find famed French author & playwright Marcel Aymé, who wrote a wonderful short story called La passe-muraille (The Man Who Walked Through Walls) about a man who uses this skill to illicit advantage when he decides to carry on an affair. One night, as the husband comes home he decides to escape but unfortunately gets stuck in a wall. Just south of the cemetery you can find a square named in his honor along with a really cool statue done in homage to his story!

Also buried here is one of my favorite French directors, Marcel Carné, who directed one of the most famous French films, Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise), starring Arletty. Considered by many critics to be the best French film ever, if not THE best film ever, it is often compared as the French Gone with the Wind!

The cemetery sits across from Au Lapin Agile and catercorner to the Montmartre vineyard. As you walk behind the cemetery along rue St-Vincent you can look over the wall as I did to see over the wall into the cemetery.
