The basilica of San Fransisco di Assisi, built at the birth place of Saint Francis (1182-1266), is one of the important sites of Christianity.

A world heritage site, the basilica is generally categorized as a Gothic architecture building because it uses mostly Gothic elements. But it seems that the impression and the spirit of the architecture is really Romanesque.
The Bell Tower in particular is in keeping with the Lombard style of the 11th and 12th centuries. Lombardia is a birth place of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy.
