Salzburg dom upper facade & bell towers

Salzburg dom ( cathedral ) is the centerpiece of the city, and is located in the very center of altstadt ( old town ) at domplatz. The first church built at this site was consecrated way back in AD 774. The original church was mostly destroyed about 900 years ago, and the few remaining parts can be seen in the crypt area.

400 years ago the autocratic prince archbishop Wolf Dietrich ruled ruthlessly over the city state of Salzbug. In those days Salzburg was one of the most important cities in Catholic Europe, and the prince archbishop of Salzburg was granted a place of importance and power second only to that enjoyed by the Pope.

The existing dom was much too small and not nearly ornate enough to satisfy Dietrich's extreme vanity and ambitions. In fact the entire core of the city far from met his expectations. After he let his complete displeasure be known, the city was mysteriously torched in 1598. Many people were killed or seriously injured by the fire. The cause of the fire remained conveniently unknown, although all rational evidence indicates that the fire was deliberately set as per Dietrich's orders. Immediately following the fire he set the rebuilding of the dom and of the city on a fast track construction basis. An army of virtual slave laborers was put to work to complete the monumental rebuilding task in as short a period of time as possible. Wolfy was determined that his new cathedral be even larger and more ornate than St. Peter's cathedral in Rome. A little family feud prevented that from happening. Read about it in my other tips.

Address: Very center of Altstadt
Directions: Hard to miss. The twin bell towers and dom are visible from far away.
