For economical and practical reasons, traditional building always uses local material. Valeggio stands in a moraine amphitheatre which overlooks the Po valley and there is no stone quarry in the neighborhood. Thus the church is built with pebbles extracted from the moraine soil. The outside walls are doted with numerous holes in order to drain moisture out of the walls. Iron grids have been set in each to prevent pigeons to nest inside and ruin the walls.
