  Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery
by asianbelle

Built in the 18th century, this is the only underground cemetery in the country. The main gate opens to a well-kept garden and the tiled pathway leads to the chapel on the opposite side of the circular wall cemetery.

Inside the chapel is the main altar where the final blessing of the dead is done. Along the walls are the crypts of deceased influential and elite parishioners of the town. A stair to the right of the chapel leads down to the underground cemetery where former parish priests were buried.

This underground area also served as the meeting place of revolutionary Filipinos during the uprising in late 1800's.

The cemetery was closed for burial in the early 1980's and was made into a historical landmark of the town. It is open daily from 8am-5pm with a P20 admission fee.

Address: Nagcarlan
Directions: Just outside the town center and along the national highway.
