The Hermitage is the greatest art museum in the world. We have been to the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan in New York, and many of the other great art museums in the world, but the Hermitage tops them all. Its art collection, which was confiscated from the royal family and a number of other wealthy private collectors during the early days of communism, is top notch. However, what adds to the Wow factor is that the Hermitage museum is located in the former royal family's Winter Palace, which is extremely large and ornate. Even if there was no art in the building, it would still be one of the top tourist attractions in the city. Its interior is beautiful and ornate, with no two rooms decorated the same way. We spent six hours in the museum and felt like we had only scratched the surface.
