The marshes surrounding Bodie Island Lighthouse offer a self-guided nature trail. There are parking areas provided at the lighthouse visitors center. This is an excellent area for coastal bird-watching --even during the winter months. Glossy ibis, heron, egret, and other wading birds abound from spring until autumn. In the summer, prepare for mosquitos

Also in this area is Bodie Island Lifesaving Station (1878-1923) - which was once called Tommy's Hummock. The renovated 1876-Type Bodie Island Station is located across from the entrance to the lighthouse on the beach side of Hwy 12, but the property is off limits to the public. It serves now as a VIP house for National Park Service and may be soon used as temporary Coast Guard office.
